Please join us Saturday, November 8th, at 2:00 p.m. when a plaque and millstone are presented to the Glenmore Chapter, APTA, by the children of Ras and Adeline Lillard. This event is free and open to the public. The millstone has historical significance to Jefferson County. It was used at the Peck Grist Mill. Later, the wheel was given to Ras and Adeline Lillard by a member of the Peck family. The Lillard children are donating the wheel to Glenmore in memory of their parents. The first permanent settlers on the west bank of Mossy Creek were Adam and Elizabeth (neè Sharkey) Peck, their four children, and a group of their slaves. The Pecks floated on log rafts down the Holston River from Virginia in 1788. Adam Peck was searching for a stream that would provide water to run a gristmill. Peck selected Mossy Creek and built his first mill there in 1795. By 1797, a hundred families lived within a three-mile radius of the mill. Grinding stones for Peck Mill were transported by ox-drawn wagon from Baltimore. The Peck family operated the mill for 146 years, until TVA ordered it torn down. Freeman Lambright, a mill expert, will be the featured speaker at the dedication.
